Winter Meetings
After signing David Wright last week it now seems that the Mets are trying to trade R.A. Dickey. General Manager’s and team officials are all at the Winter Meetings in Nashville this week where many deals get done or at least the ground work for future deals. It’s really not known what Dickey is looking for but it would be a big mistake to trade him.
The Mets are not a win now team as we know but you can never have enough pitching and Dickey was by far our best player last year. Where are the Mets planning on getting the 20 wins he had last season? You can argue that he is old but he throws a knuckle ball. He might be able to pitch effectively the next three or four years.
Some teams that have been linked to Dickey are the Red Sox, Rangers and Royals. The Red Sox seem to be linked to everyone though so far this week. They signed catcher Mike Napoli and intend on having him play first base. If the Mets don’t trade Dickey it seems they might trade Jon Niese instead. You might be able to get more for Niese since he’s younger and has a reasonable contract.
It seems like the Mike Pelfrey era is over as the Mets did not tender him a contract. He’s not expected to be ready by Spring Training anyway. He was serviceable at best. Outside of last year, he never missed starts. He was frustrating because he good look so good for long stretches but then just give it up as easy.
The Mets are meeting with Scott Hairston’s reps today.
The big free agents this year are Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers and Zack Greinke.
