Wild Night of Baseball

I donít know if there is anything better than October baseball and last night proved it. The Yankees and Athletics had dramatic late inning rallies to end both ball games. The Yankees were down 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth inning when Joe Girardi pinch-hit for Alex Rodriguez. He sent up Raul Ibanez who homered off Oriole closer Jim Johnson to tie the game with one out. Ibanez would cap the game off with another homerun in the bottom of the twelfth inning off Brian Matusz to end it.

The Yankees are now up two games to one with a chance to close out the series tonight. The Yankees will throw Phil Hughes and the Orioles will counter with Joe Saunders. Saunders beat the Rangers last week in a one-game playoff to see who would face the Yankees.

The Athletics stunned the Detroit Tigers by scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning against closer Jose Valverde. Seth Smith had the game-tying two-run double and Coco Crisp won it with a single. The Tigers had taken a 3-1 lead in the top of the eighth inning when AviSail Garcia drove home Omar Infante with a single.

The Aís and Tigers series is now tied at two games each with the deciding fifth game tonight. Justin Verlander will pitch against Jarrod Parker. Verlander beat the Aís in game one of this series.

The Giants and Reds also play a deciding fifth game this afternoon at 1:00 pm ET. The Giants evened up the series yesterday. Matt Cain will be opposite Matt Latos in todayís game.

Lastly, the Cardinals can knock out the top-seeded Washington Nationals with a win in Washington today. Kyle Lohse gets the ball against Ross Detwiler. This game is scheduled for 4:00 pm ET.
