Reyes to Toronto

Jose Reyes
Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE
The first huge trade of the baseball season is about to go down with anyone being paid on the Marlins going to the Toronto Blue Jays. The proposed trade will send Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle, John Buck and Emilio Bonifacio going to the Blue Jays for Yunel Escobar and some prospects.

If the trade goes through the Marlins would have traded all their big free agent signings from last season. They have already traded Heath Bell earlier. This trade would significantly improve the Blue Jays.

I donít understand how baseball allows the Marlins to do this every few seasons. Normally they have a fire sale after they win the World Series but these moves come after they finished in last place. This gives hope to me that the Mets wonít finish last in the NL East next season.

Mets Drop Two of Three over the Weekend

It wasnít a very good weekend for the Mets as they dropped two out of three games in Toronto against the Blue Jays. Jon Niese only pitched three innings on Friday night giving up four homeruns in a blowout victory by the Jays. Niese is now 2-2 on the season with a 4.85 ERA.

David Wright got the day off on Saturday and the Mets offense took the day off as well. The Mets were shutout 2-0 on Saturday. The offense only managed three hits off Toronto starter Brandon Morrow who went all nine innings. The only highlight of the game was the relief effort by Jeremy Hefner was who just called up from AAA. Hefner only gave up two runs in his five innings of relief.

The Mets were able to salvage the series with a 6-5 victory yesterday. Dillon Gee went 6.2 innings for the win giving up five hits and three runs. The Mets bullpen made the game interesting with Bobby Parnell giving up two runs in the eighth inning. Frank Francisco allowed the first two Jays to reach in the ninth inning before striking out the side to earn his tenth save of the season. Mike Baxter had a big day at the plate falling a homerun short of the cycle. Baxter is now hitting .390 for the season.

The Mets start a three game series tonight in Pittsburgh against the Pirates with Johan Santana on the mound against Eric Bedard.

Mets Badly Beaten

The Mets got destroyed tonight by a score of 14-5 to the Toronto Blue Jays. The Blue Jays played homerun derby off start Jon Niese. Niese gave up four homeruns in three innings of work. His final stat line was three innings, eight hits and eight runs allowed.

The Mets bullpen was again as Manny Acosta gave up five more runs in his two innings of work. How this guy is still in the major leagues is beyond me. His ERA for the year is currently at 10.53. The best line of the night had to go to backup catcher Rob Johnson who pitched a scoreless eighth inning with a strikeout.

The Mets will try to even the series tomorrow with Miguel Batista on the mound. Also the Devils and Rangers meet up for game four of their playoff series at 1:00 pm.

Performance Pitching

Monday brought its share of dominant pitching performances. Yesterday alone, seven pitchers went at least 7 innings and gave up no more than 1 earned run. This stat isn't even including the Pirate's Kevin Correia who threw a complete game against the Reds, only surrendering 2 earned runs.
