Rutgers Officially Leaving
The Scarlet Knights will officially move into the Big Ten Conference today as they have scheduled a 2:00 pm ET press conference at the Hale Center as reported by nj.com. As of now, Rutgers will begin play in the Big Ten in 2014. The Big East calls for a $10 million departure fee and a 27-month delay in moving but other schools have left sooner like West Virginia.
The move has been rumored since Saturday when Maryland was initially thinking of leaving the ACC for the Big Ten. Maryland officially joined yesterday paving the way for Rutgers to leave today. Rutgers and Maryland will meet in the Leaders Division of the Big Ten. They will be in same division with Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Purdue and Indiana.
The departure of Rutgers is impacting other schools that were set to join the Big East. Boise State, San Diego State and BYU are supposedly talking to the Mountain West Conference about rejoining the league. Navy has also expressed some concern.
I’m happy that Rutgers is going to a better conference but it’s sad as well. I grew up being a big fan of the Big East in both football and basketball. Basketball especially is going to take a hard hit losing so many schools. It’s all about money these days and there will be more schools bouncing around in the future.
