Russell Athletic Bowl
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights will look to ease the pain of their final regular season game when they meet the Virginia Tech Hokies in the Russell Athletic Bowl later today. Rutgers missed out on winning the Big East when they fell to Louisville back on November 29th. Rutgers finished their regular season with a record of 9-3 and 5-2 in the Big East.
They meet an old foe in Virginia Tech who was previously in the Big East before moving to the ACC in 2004. Virginia Tech has dominated the series as they’ve won 11 of the 14 all-time meetings. Rutgers hasn’t defeated Virginia Tech since 1992.
Virginia Tech enters this game with a 6-6 overall record while going 4-4 in the ACC. They won their last two games against Boston College and Virginia to become bowl eligible. They have an amazing streak of making it to a bowl game for 20 straight seasons.
Rutgers will have to focus on Virginia Tech’s quarterback Logan Thomas. Thomas is one of the biggest quarterbacks in the country as he stands 6-foot-6 and weighs 260 pounds. He threw for 2,783 yards with 17 touchdowns. He was also the leading rusher on the team with 528 yards and nine scores.
The Hokies score about four more points a game than Rutgers with a better ground game. Virginia Tech averages 157.8 rushing yards to 125.9 for Rutgers. Virginia Tech also averages 391.8 total yards a game while Rutgers finished with 341.1.
The difference in the game will come down to the defense where Rutgers has the advantage. The Scarlet Knights finished fifth in the nation in points against as they only allowed 14.3 points a game. The Hokies allow 23.9 points per game so look for Rutgers to re-establish Jawan Jamison in this game. They will also need a turnover free game from Gary Nova.
