Devils Advance to Finals

It was a pretty bad night for fans of the Philadelphia teams. The Flyers were eliminated from the NHL playoffs by the Devils, the Phillies blew a lead for the second consecutive day and lost to the Mets and the 76ers lost to the Bulls in game five of their NBA playoff series.

The Devils didn’t play their best game of the series but won 3-1 on goals by Bryce Salvador, David Clarkson and Ilya Kovalchuk. The Flyers like they have all series got the first goal of the game by Max Talbot. The Devils scored two minutes later on Salvador’s goal. The goal by Clarkson could have been the back breaker for the Flyers. Goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov had the puck and tried to send it into the corner but it hit Clarkson’s stick and went into the net. The goal seemed to take all of the energy away from the Flyers.

The Flyers took a lot of unnecessary penalties during the game and it finally came back to bite them in the third period. James van Riemsdyk took a mindless holding penalty in the offensive zone which put the Devils on the power play and they clinched the game four seconds into the penalty when Kovalchuk scored his fifth goal of the postseason.

The Devils will now wait for the winner of the Rangers-Capitals series with game six tonight in Washington D.C.

The Mets trailed 4-0 after the second inning against the Phillies last night but came back to beat the Phillies 7-4. The Mets once again got a bunch of hits with two outs that plated runs. The Phillies also had some bad defense and relief pitching which led to the Mets comeback.

The Mets will look for the sweep tonight when Dillon Gee opposes Cliff Lee. The Mets are currently 1.5 games out of first place.

Both Teams go Down

It was a bad day for my local sports teams after a really good start to the weekend. The Devils lost the second game of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals to the Florida Panthers by a score of 4-2. They gave up a goal less than a minute in and were down 3-0 after two periods.

They scored two quick goals at the beginning of the 3rd period to cut the deficit to a goal but were unable to get the equalizer. Jose Theodore made some really nice saves on Zach Parise and Ilya Kovalchuk at the end of the game. The series is now tied at one with the series heading to New Jersey.

The Mets had a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning against the Phillies but some bad defense and ineffective relief pitching did them in as the Phillies scored five runs in the eighth inning. Mike Pelfrey only gave up one run in six innings but the Mets never scored a run after the first inning. Ike Davis hit a two run homer off Cole Hamels but Hamels shut the Mets down the rest of the way. The loss puts the Mets at 6-3 on the season.

Mets Win Again

The Mets improved to 6-2 yesterday with a 5-0 win over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. David Wright returned to action and on the first pitch he saw from Vance Worley, he hit a homerun to center field to give the Mets a quick 1-0 lead. Lucas Duda also hit a 2 run homer and Ruben Tejada added an RBI double.

Jon Niese had another really good outing throwing 6.2 innings of shutout ball and Bobby Parnell and Jon Rauch closed out the game. The Phillies are not the scary team they have been in the past without Ryan Howard and Chase Utley. The Mets pitching has been very good through the first eight games but the real test will be today when Mike Pelfrey pitches. If the Mets are going to have a successful season they need Pelfrey to pick it up. He was ok in his last outing against the Nationals but he’s been really bad at Citizens Bank Park in his career.

Luckily for the Mets Cole Hamels will be pitching for the Phillies. For one of the best starting pitchers in the National League; Hamels is only 3-10 lifetime against the Mets. Jason Bay is out of the lineup today as Scott Hairston will play left field. The Mets are currently ½ game behind the Nationals for the NL East lead.

MLB Top 5 4/27/11

Another week brings another top 5. This week's list looks very similar to the one posted last week; the only change coming at the 5th and final spot. As the weather's been warming, so have some teams.

The talk of the week surrounds the Boston Red Sox. They have turned up their level of play and are sitting right at the .500 mark. Though they do not quite make my list this week, there is no denying their talent and the fact that they will be frequenting these posts in the near future

MLB Top 5 4/20/2011

There was a little reshuffling in my top 5 this week, with one team dropping off the list. The 4 that remain from last week change slots, and the World Series champs make the cut for this week's top 5. It's still very early and there are some other teams with solid records, but it's hard to compare wins and losses when teams are still rounding into regular season form. With that I felt like I had a little explaining to do with my choices.

The Cleveland Indians share the best record in baseball with the Colorado Rockies, but the Indians did not make the cut. They only have played in one full series against a team playing at least .500 baseball and they lost that series to the Angels. Their pitching has been lights out but it's still too early for me to tell if this streak is due to scheduling or a legitimate turnaround. Two other teams that I seriously looked at for spots on the list were the LA Angels and Cincinnati Reds; maybe next week guys

MLB Top 5 4/13/2011

It's certainly hard to have any kind of rankings this early in the year but I'll do my best to try and determine who looks to be the best of MLB. The top two spots are locks right now with Texas and the Phillies. After that things get a little fuzzier. This early in the year it's more common to find unlikely teams like Minnesota, Atlanta, St. Louis and San Francisco on the bottom, so it's hard to truly gauge the top teams. Here are my current top 5 of the MLB.

1. Texas Rangers

NL Studs and Duds 4/9/11

Let's see how the studs and duds of the NL stack up against my picks from the AL. The studs of the NL are very recognizable names and represent the two best teams in the National League. The duds may not be quite as well known, and after this week they probably wouldn't mind people looking the other way on their performances.

The stud pitcher of the NL this week is Tim Lincecum. The Freak put together quite the week, going a combined 14 innings over his 2 starts and striking out a whopping 18 batters. He allowed 8 hits and only 1 ER leaving his ERA at a miniscule 0.64. Lincecum will try to avenge his tough luck loss to the Dodgers this week when Los Angeles comes to San Francisco to face the Giants

Intriguing Matchups

While many will be tuned into the Master's this weekend, baseball has a few games that pit division rivals against each other. The Phillies travel to Atlanta for a matchup of two teams likely to play into October. Also this weekend the rivalry of all baseball rivalries will see the Yankees roll into Boston. Both of these series should be entertaining and include this weekend's most intriguing pitching matchups.

Trouble in Beantown?

The MLB offseason certainly took some interesting turns. Several of the larger name free agents wound up in destinations that many did not predict. A few of these moves left us entering the season with fairly clear favorites to represent each league come October.

The big fish this offseason was undoubtedly Cliff Lee, coming off a strong performance last year especially in the playoffs. He shocked the baseball world by passing on the Yankee's higher paycheck to join a filthy rotation in Philadelphia
