NFL Fever

April 21st 2011 14:30
There has been good news coming out of the NFL meetings and with the schedule being released and talk of the upcoming draft I am starting to feel that football fever again. The draft is only a week away, and while it is not nearly as hyped as years past, it still should be intriguing to see where some of the big names go. The schedule also shows something to get excited about with several compelling early matchups.

The Carolina Panthers just can't seem to catch a break. They own a number one pick in next week's NFL draft that no one really envies. They are coming off an awful 2-14 season that earned them the number 1 pick and saw an end to the John Fox era in Carolina. Now, as the schedule's been released, they find out that statistically they have the hardest schedule of all teams in the upcoming 2011-2012 season. The Panthers are joined at the top of the list of hardest schedules by fellow cellar dwellers Buffalo. This is of course based off of last year's records so it could end up totally different, but nonetheless this news can't excite Panther fans.

Rodgers and the defending champs open up against the Saints

While Carolina and it's fans may not be too excited, there are certainly some intriguing matchups coming up next year. The Thursday night opener pits the Saints against the defending champs in Green Bay. Week one also will showcase the two top teams of the AFC North when the Steelers head to Baltimore to face their rivals the Ravens. Other interesting week 1 matchups include Atlanta vs. Chicago, Dallas vs. the Jets and Indy vs. Houston

If all goes as planned and the NFL starts when expected, opening weekend games will be played Sunday September 11th. Teams across the country will be remembering those lost in different ways, but the NFL has scheduled the Giants to play the Redskins as a tribute of sort to the event.

So while we're still only in April and labor talks are dragging on, actually seeing the matchups on paper has me excited for some football. Are you ready?

Tebow's Future

April 14th 2011 09:15
There is no doubt that Tim Tebow had one of the greatest college careers of any player. He led the Florida Gators to two BCS National Championship games, and was named first team All-American twice. He took home a Heisman trophy in 2007 and was in the running for another his final two years of school. His list of achievements makes it impossible to debate his greatness at the college level. Even with his proven leadership abilities and winning history, Tebow entered last year's NFL draft surrounded by questions.

tim tebow
Some question Tebow's future in Denver

Coming into the draft, some said that Tebow could be a successful QB in the NFL while others stated that he would only prosper if used in the wild cat as a hybrid full back and quarterback. The big knock on Tebow was his throwing motion. Teams knew that if they took him they would have to completely change his throwing mechanics, making him more of a development pick and not someone you usually look to take in the first round. Those Tebow supporters said that teams should look to adapt their systems to Tebow and not the other way around.

While Tebow had his critics, few could argue with the leadership and character he would add to any team. One team was sold enough on Tebow to trade up to take the Gator's QB. The Denver Broncos gave up several picks to jump back into the first round and make Tebow their second pick of the draft. Few could believe that Tebow went this early, and perhaps more surprising was the fact that he went before Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen.

Former Bronco's star Elway now team's Chief Football Executive

The man that was behind the pick, Josh McDaniel, is now out as coach of the Broncos and new coach John Fox has gone as far as naming veteran Kyle Orton as the team's starter going into this season. Former Bronco great and current Chief Football Executive of the team John Elway also is apparently not sold on Tebow being the starter.

Tebow made the field sparingly throughout the 2010 season until week 15 in Oakland where he received his first start. While the Broncos lost the game, Tebow ran and threw for over 200 yards combined and accounted for the team's two touchdowns. Tebow picked up his first W as a Bronco QB the next week in front of his home crowd against the Houston Texans, throwing for over 300 yards. Tebow ended the year with a respectalbe 82.1 QB rating, throwing 5 touchdowns to his 3 interceptions.

john fox
Fox shocked many with his offseason comments

Earlier this offseason, Fox shocked many people by coming out and naming Orton as his starter. This surprise was magnified by Tebow's showing at the end of last season. Fox has stepped back a little bit from his statements by saying more will be told when the actual competition begins during training camp, but it is evident that there are some questions floating around the heads of Bronco's coaches and management about Tebow's future with the team. How Denver utilizes its upcoming draft picks may also shed some light on the situation. It appears that Elway and Fox aren't sold on Tebow and may still be looking for their quarterback of the future.

Where Will Kolb Land?

April 12th 2011 09:30
The current NFL lockout has stopped one the best periods of the NFL offseason in its free agency. The lock on trading players for this April's draft picks has also put a stop to any wheeling and dealing that may have taken place. The big name out there on the trade market is current Philadelphia Eagle's backup Kevin Kolb. With the emergence of Michael Vick and a weak QB class, many teams have shown interest in Kolb.

Newton #1?

April 7th 2011 14:12
I for one am missing the NFL already and it's only April. By now teams are usually signing new free agents and excitement for the draft is ramping up. While I am still excited about the upcoming draft, everything is overshadowed by labor talks and now a court decision that is said to take weeks to happen. While I am enjoying the beginning of baseball season, one football related note did catch my attention today and it involves the most known player in this month's upcoming draft.
