The NFL wrapped up its annual college draft today with rounds four through seven being completed. It was a pretty busy day for the Jets as they made five picks in the last two rounds. They choose two safeties, a guard, a running back and a wide receiver. Here is the total list of Jets draft picks:
1st round Quinton Coples DE North Carolina
2nd round Stephen Hill WR Georgia Tech
3rd round Demario Davis LB Arkansas State
6th round Josh Bush S Wake Forest
6th round Terrance Ganaway RB Baylor
6th round Robert T. Griffin OG Baylor
7th round Antonio Allen S South Carolina
7th round Jordan White WR Western Michigan
I really like the draft this year as we took guys with speed and positions we needed depth at. We really needed safeties and we got two of them. I saw articles saying they thought Antonio Allen would be drafted in the third round so to get him in the last round could be a steal. The wide receiver we took last had 140 receptions his last season at Western Michigan and 92 his junior year so this guy could be our slot receiver going forward. I can’t see Braylon Edwards coming back now.
We needed speed on both sides of the ball and we got that especially with Stephen Hill and Damario Davis. Hill’s speed should open up the middle of the field to help out Dustin Keller and our running game. Teams won’t be able to double team Santonio Holmes anymore.
We’ve had really slow linebackers for a while now and Davis was one of the fastest linebackers around. He should start immediately on special teams and work his way up.
The rookies should be reporting to rookie camp in a few weeks.
The Jets have made two picks tonight in the second and third rounds of the NFL Draft. In the second they traded up to pick Georgia Tech wide receiver Stephen Hill. Hill was the fastest receiver at the combine. He’s 6’4” as well giving the Jets size and a deep threat that they haven’t had in a long time. He should become the 2nd receiver next season.
In the third round the Jets drafted a linebacker from Arkansas State, Demario Davis. Davis is one of the fastest linebackers in this draft and should play inside linebacker. He could be Bart Scott’s eventual replacement and should play special teams.
I like both picks in that the Jets are finally drafting some speed on both sides of the ball which we’ve been lacking forever. The Jets won’t draft again until the sixth round tomorrow where they have three picks and they will also pick twice in the seventh round.
I’m really pumped for all the sports going on tonight. It has been a good day so far with the Mets finishing off the sweep of the Marlins with a two run rally in the ninth inning off of Heath Bell to win 3-2. I really don’t know how they keep winning with so little offense but the pitching has been great.
The Devils play game 7 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. If they win tonight they will either play the Flyers or the Capitals in the next round. I really like the fact that they are not home tonight as they play much better on the road. The Rangers also play a game 7 tonight against Ottawa at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers game will be on at 7 while the Devils are on at 8:30.
One of my favorite events of the year is tonight as well, the NFL Draft. I hate that it has become a three day event. It was so much better just being on Saturday and Sunday but the NFL loves making money so they moved it to primetime. They will only do the first round tonight. We already know that Andrew Luck is going to the Colts with the first pick and Robert Griffin III will go next to Washington.
The Jets will select 16th and I’ve seen many names linked to them in mock drafts. The two guys I’ve really started to like are OLB/DE’s Chandler Jones from Syracuse and Melvin Ingram from South Carolina. There is a chance neither will be there but I’m really hoping one of them slips. Chandler Jones is the brother of UFC fighter and champion Jon Jones and they also have another brother who plays for the Baltimore Ravens, Arthur Jones.
I wouldn’t mind if they take an offensive lineman either or a receiver. They seem to have more holes to fill this year. Regardless of position, we need to start drafting guys with some speed.
I knew the Giants winning the Super Bowl would be awful for a Jet fan but I really didn’t think Giant fans would be so obsessed with everything the Jets do. If you listen to any of the local radio shows, all you hear the past weeks is Giant fans calling in blasting the Jets for getting Tim Tebow. I keep hearing why did the Jets have a press conference for the backup quarterback? Well last time I checked, teams generally have press conferences or conference calls anytime a new player is brought in especially one as popular as Tebow. If the Jets didn’t make Tebow available for the media, they’d be getting knocked for that.
My issue with the media is the fact that it’s nowhere near objective anymore. Anyone with an opinion can state anything without checking the facts. Did I like the move to get Tebow, of course not? The reason I didn’t like it is because the media will be all over it this year and Giant fans. I went on my facebook account today and didn’t see anything from fellow Jet fans regarding Tebow. I did see multiple posts from Giant fans about how much of a joke the Jets are though. Why do Giant fans care what the Jets do

I just finished watching Tim Tebow’s press conference with the New York media today and realized it’s really hard to dislike the guy. I honestly don’t know how some people become journalists because I heard some of the most ridiculous questions ever asked but Tebow played it off really well. He came off as very likeable and excited about being a Jet. I just saw a Youtube clip where he literally said he was excited 45 times during the press conference.
In a perfect world for Jet fans, Mark Sanchez becomes the quarterback we have been waiting for and Tebow chips in with a few plays per game. I really like the thought of having Sanchez and Tebow in the game at the same time. It will be interesting to see how the Jets use him this year maybe we’ll see him as a slot receiver or on special teams. Having Tebow on the field has the potential to lead to huge plays. Our offense was awful last season so anything has to be better. You can say a lot of things about Tim Tebow but one of those things is the fact that the makes plays. Every team looks for playmakers on both sides of the ball and Tebow is one of them

Lost in the Tim Tebow news yesterday was the severe punishment handed down by Roger Goodell to the New Orleans Saints. The commissioner hammered the Saints far stronger than anyone could have possibly predicted. Head Coach Sean Payton got suspended or an entire year and former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is suspended indefinitely. The general manager got suspended for the first 8 games next season and another coach will miss 6 games. The team also lost draft picks and were fined.
I really didn’t think Payton would get suspended without pay or an entire season. I understand Goodell had to come down harsh but isn’t that too harsh? The Saints will be without a coach and general manager or half of a season. We haven’t even heard what the penalties will be for the players supposedly involved. I would imagine some players could miss substantial time and lose a pretty good amount of their pay as well

Well they did it. The Jets acquired Tim Tebow from the Broncos for a 4th and 6th round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. The Jets also received a 7th round pick in return. Since the news came down I’ve been trying to find the positives but it’s been hard to do.
The Jets already have a circus like atmosphere hanging around the team from last season and bringing in Tebowmania is going to add to it. From a football standpoint, the move makes no sense. We basically have a fourth quarterback on the roster when we really need another safety, offensive line help and pass rushers. You’re putting more pressure on Mark Sanchez to work out because once he has a bad game fans are going to be calling for Tebow to play. Everyone knows the media in New York blows everything out of proportion and not we have the biggest story in the NFL coming over

Once again the Jets are brought up when a player becomes available. There is absolutely no reason for them to even be interested in Tim Tebow unless he wants to play fullback. Did anyone see this guy play last season? He has great intangibles and leadership; that can’t be denied. He’s just not a professional quarterback.
He’s going to be connected to the Jets because offensive coordinator Tony Sparano was the head coach in Miami when the Dolphins started using the Wildcat offense with Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams. I don’t see a fit on the Jets; they already have three quarterbacks on the roster with Mark Sanchez, Drew Stanton and Greg McElroy. If he wanted to come and have a specific package for him I might not have a problem with it but we all know he only sees himself as a quarterback

Peyton Manning's new football home.
Peyton Manning has finally chosen his future home and he will become a Denver Bronco. We had heard for quite some time that he preferred the AFC and that appears to be true. There were reports that the 49ers jumped into the Manning race and I thought that would have been a perfect fit. Manning stays in the horse family going from the Colts to the Broncos.
Outside of the 49ers, this is probably the best fit for him. The division isn’t tough and the Broncos have a very good defense. They always have a good running game and they have some decent receivers

Yesterday was a rather mild day of the NCAA Tournament unlike the day before. All of the higher ranked seeds won their games yesterday. The best game I thought was VCU and Indiana where Indiana won on a jumper with around 10 seconds left. I was pulling for VCU but it looks like Indiana is finally back.
The game I’m expecting most people to be into will be the 15 seed Lehigh taking on 10 seed Xavier after they both pulled off upsets in the first round. If you didn’t see it Lehigh knocked off Duke on Friday night and Xavier sent home Notre Dame. The Lehigh game is on at 7:45 ET tonight

What started as an exciting day in sports went against my teams today. We’ve heard for months that Dwight Howard wanted to play in Brooklyn. The worst case scenario would be the Nets wouldn’t be able to trade for him at the trade deadline, so they would have an opportunity to sign him in July as a free agent. No one that I can remember actually picked up their own player option and bypass free agency. This could only happen to the Nets. I know will root against Dwight Howard. The Nets picked up Gerald Wallace from the Portland Trailblazers for two expiring contracts and a first round pick next season. I don’t understand why they had to throw in a pick when that is easily going to be in the top 10.
The Nets have to try and convince Deron Williams to stay now which seems like it won’t happen. The sad part is I don’t think the Nets are that bad if they had a healthy Brook Lopez all year but he’s missed all but 4 or 5 games

There have been plenty of moves since Free Agency started yesterday. Since I’m a Jets fan I’ll start there. The team brought back OLB and longest tenured Jet, Bryan Thomas on a 1 year deal. He suffered an Achilles injury early in the season and it was evident we really missed him. The Jets have been linked to a couple safeties like Reggie Nelson, and Brandon Merriweather and they are bringing in ex-Lions quarterback Drew Stanton in for a visit. Stanton played his college ball at Michigan State.
Staying in the AFC East, the Bills are said to be close to signing the best defensive free agent on the market in OLB, DE Mario Williams. Williams was the first pick taken by the Texans in the 2006 NFL Draft. They were also rumored to be close to signing New Orleans Saints wide receiver Robert Meachem, but he instead signed with the San Diego Chargers. The Miami Dolphins traded away star wide receiver Brandon Marshall to the Bears in exchange for two draft picks, both believed to be 3rd round picks. You thought maybe Miami was looking to clear space for Peyton Manning and Reggie Wayne, but Wayne re-signed with the Colts

I never really thought about bounties being a part of professional football. The only time I really think of bounty is when I’m watching "Dog: The Bounty Hunter" or that awful movie “The Bounty Hunter” with Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler. I had heard in the past that Buddy Ryan would offer incentives to his players when he was the coach of the Eagles to take out an opposing player.
The more I think about it, I would imagine this goes on quite a bit amongst the players. What do we love as football fans? We love touchdowns and big hits. If guys on the team set a pool up between themselves I don’t really have a problem with it. The issue would be if players are going out of their way to intentionally hurt a player

I didn't create a post yesterday since I participated in the Polar Bear Plunge in Seaside Heights, NJ but now that I'm no longer freezing we can get to sports. As I wake up this morning I'm able to watch the NFL Combine. I don't know when or why I've grown to love this event. You would think watching a bunch of guys running, jumping and lifting would be rather boring.
As I'm watching I just saw RG III run a 4.41 and then a 4.38 40 yard dash. That is some serious speed, even faster than what Cam Newton ran last year. Andrew Luck is going to be running in the afternoon but neither QB prospects are going to throw here

In the near future, the Colts are going to make a decision on whether or not to keep Peyton Manning for next year. He's due a $28 million dollar roster bonus in early March and without knowing the extent of his injury most "experts" believe he will be let go. If Peyton Manning hits the open market, he could arguably be the most coveted free agent since the system was implemented. You could make a case that Reggie White may have been the biggest free agent as well.
We’ve heard the rumors how the New York Jets might be interested and this could intensify with ESPN’s Ron Jaworski coming out and saying how much of a perfect fit Manning would be there. As a side note, really ESPN, you couldn't keep Jaws and get rid of Gruden? Sure, a 100% healthy Manning would be great in NY, but no one knows what his physical condition is currently

If you can find a more loyal but tortured fanbase, I would love for it to be pointed out to me. I became a fan of both teams through family as I imagine most fans did. I remember being a kid going to watch a Mets vs Expos game at my cousin's house. I remember this day vividly because my sister was getting baptized that day and for whatever reason I didn't have to go. The Mets won that day and I was hooked. Who knows I may have become a Nationals fan that day and would own a Strasburg jersey.
My earliest memory of the Jets was watching the regular season finale in 1991 against the Dolphins. The winner of that game was going to make the playoffs. I remember watching the game at my Grandmother's house and watching in horror as Marino led the Dolphins on a scoring drive late in the 4th quarter to put them ahead. I was 10 years old at the time and started crying (should have been a hint right there) and my grandparents' drove me home

There has been good news coming out of the NFL meetings and with the schedule being released and talk of the upcoming draft I am starting to feel that football fever again. The draft is only a week away, and while it is not nearly as hyped as years past, it still should be intriguing to see where some of the big names go. The schedule also shows something to get excited about with several compelling early matchups.
The Carolina Panthers just can't seem to catch a break. They own a number one pick in next week's NFL draft that no one really envies. They are coming off an awful 2-14 season that earned them the number 1 pick and saw an end to the John Fox era in Carolina. Now, as the schedule's been released, they find out that statistically they have the hardest schedule of all teams in the upcoming 2011-2012 season. The Panthers are joined at the top of the list of hardest schedules by fellow cellar dwellers Buffalo. This is of course based off of last year's records so it could end up totally different, but nonetheless this news can't excite Panther fans

There is no doubt that Tim Tebow had one of the greatest college careers of any player. He led the Florida Gators to two BCS National Championship games, and was named first team All-American twice. He took home a Heisman trophy in 2007 and was in the running for another his final two years of school. His list of achievements makes it impossible to debate his greatness at the college level. Even with his proven leadership abilities and winning history, Tebow entered last year's NFL draft surrounded by questions.
Some question Tebow's future in Denver

The current NFL lockout has stopped one the best periods of the NFL offseason in its free agency. The lock on trading players for this April's draft picks has also put a stop to any wheeling and dealing that may have taken place. The big name out there on the trade market is current Philadelphia Eagle's backup Kevin Kolb. With the emergence of Michael Vick and a weak QB class, many teams have shown interest in Kolb.
Kolb could be on the move this offseason
