Winter Meetings

After signing David Wright last week it now seems that the Mets are trying to trade R.A. Dickey. General Managerís and team officials are all at the Winter Meetings in Nashville this week where many deals get done or at least the ground work for future deals. Itís really not known what Dickey is looking for but it would be a big mistake to trade him.

The Mets are not a win now team as we know but you can never have enough pitching and Dickey was by far our best player last year. Where are the Mets planning on getting the 20 wins he had last season? You can argue that he is old but he throws a knuckle ball. He might be able to pitch effectively the next three or four years.

Some teams that have been linked to Dickey are the Red Sox, Rangers and Royals. The Red Sox seem to be linked to everyone though so far this week. They signed catcher Mike Napoli and intend on having him play first base. If the Mets donít trade Dickey it seems they might trade Jon Niese instead. You might be able to get more for Niese since heís younger and has a reasonable contract.

It seems like the Mike Pelfrey era is over as the Mets did not tender him a contract. Heís not expected to be ready by Spring Training anyway. He was serviceable at best. Outside of last year, he never missed starts. He was frustrating because he good look so good for long stretches but then just give it up as easy.

The Mets are meeting with Scott Hairstonís reps today.

Dickey Wins CY Young

R.A. Dickey, CY Young, New York Mets
Anthony Gruppuso/US Presswire
R.A. Dickey became the third Met to win the NL CY Young Award yesterday as he beat out Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers and Gio Gonzalez of the Nationals. He went 20-6 on the season with a 2.73 ERA and 230 strikeouts. He is the first knuckleballer to win the award.

The other Mets to win the award were Tom Seaver and Dwight Gooden. Seaver won the award in 1969, 1973 and 1975 while Gooden won his in 1985. Dickey got 27 of a possible 32 first-place votes. His twenty win season was the first by a Met since Frank Viola in 1990. The team went 74-88 overall.

The Mets are currently trying to sign Dickey to a long-term deal along with David Wright.

Mets end season

The Mets wrap up another awful season later today against the Marlins at 4:00 pm. The Mets are 73-88 going into the finale currently on a four-game losing streak. The only silver lining of this season is they beat out the Marlins for last place in the division.

Terry Collins, New York Mets
William Perlman/US Presswire
The Mets played above their heads in the first half of the season but completely collapsed in the second half which has been the same story since 2007. The front office never acquired help for the team around the All-Star break and they just couldnít hit enough to stay competitive.

The biggest bright spot by far was R.A. Dickey who pitched last night. Dickey somehow won 20 games for this team while we learned heís been pitching hurt since April. He announced after the game last night that he had a torn abdominal muscle but bypasses surgery to keep pitching. It would be a real shame if Dickey does not get the CY Young award after being passed over to start the All-Star game.

Ike Davis hit 30 homeruns which is incredible since he was so awful the first two months of the season. There was talk that he would get sent to the minors but he really picked it up. If the Mets decide to trade him they better get a lot in return.

Jeremy Hefner will pitch today against Tom Koehler in the finale.

Dickey goes for 20

R.A. Dickey
Debby Wong-US PRESSWIRE
R.A. Dickey looks to win his 20th game this afternoon as the Mets wrap up a four-game series with the Pirates. The Mets have won two of the first three games. Dickey is 19-6 on the season and will oppose Kevin Correia who is 11-10. This is the last home game for the Mets this season.

If Dickey wins his 20th game how can he not win the NL CY Young Award? The team is 13 games under .500 but he has 13 more wins than losses. It was a shame he didnít start the All-Star game back in July and it would be even worse if he misses this award

Harvey leaves with lead

Matt Harvey made his final start of the year tonight for the Mets and pitched very well leaving with the lead after seven innings. Harvey only gave up one hit, a leadoff homerun to Jimmy Rollins to start the game. His final line shows seven innings pitched, one hit, one run, three walks and seven strikeouts.

Matt Harvey
Frank Victores/US Presswire
If the Mets are able to hold the lead Harvey will finish his rookie season with a 4-5 record to go along with a 2.73 ERA. He pitched much better than his record shows as evidenced by the ERA. The Mets just have not been able to score for him much like most of the other pitchers on the roster

Mets looking to trade Ike?

The Mets didnít lose today as they were rained out but the bigger news has been stories going around about how the team could trade Ike Davis in the offseason. As usual with the Mets, this information makes no sense to me. Davis is young and is our only legitimate power hitter.

Ike Davis
Jeff Griffith/US Presswire
The man didnít hit at all in the beginning of the year and he still has 27 homeruns and plays a good first base. Why would you trade him? They supposedly want to take a look at Lucas Duda at first place but have we forgotten that he was sent to the minors for a month earlier this year

Football Weekend

The Mets lost tonight to the Braves by a score of 3-0. Jon Niese was the hard luck loser only giving up one run in six innings. The Mets offense no showed again which has been a common them in the second half. They were shut out by Paul Maholm, are you kidding me?

Bobby Parnell and Jenry Mejia each gave up one run in relief. Basically once the Braves got two runs it was over. The Mets only had five hits on the night and they continue to be horrendous at home this season

Davis homers in win

R.A. Dickey
Anthony Gruppuso-US PRESSWIRE
The Mets beat the Cardinals today by a score of 6-2. The reason they won? R.A. Dickey pitched and got his 18th win of the season. Dickey went 6.2 innings giving up both Cardinal runs. He struck out five batters along the way.

The offense was led by Ike Davis who hit his 26th homerun on the year. Heís had a knack for hitting three-run homers which was the case today. He now has 77 RBIís on the season. He is only two behind David Wright for the team lead and has hit 13 homeruns since the All-Star break. He now has nine more homeruns than Wright to lead the team as well

Mets drop another

Mets lost to the Cardinals tonight by a score of 5-1. Matt Harvey fell to 3-4 on the year going five innings and giving up three runs. The Mets offense did nothing as usual, only getting a Mike Baxter sac fly in the 8th inning.

One exciting aspect to this game was that Jeurys Familia made his major league debut by pitching a scoreless eighth inning giving up one hit and striking out one. Familia seems to be headed towards being a relief pitcher in the big leagues

Mets lose in unreal fashion

The Mets lost in extremely bizarre fashion today to the St. Louis Cardinals. In a game played this afternoon, the Cardinals defeated the Mets by a score of 5-4. Andres Torres had appeared to lead off the top of the ninth inning with a double but the Cardinals appealed and Torres was called out.

Replays showed that Torres did touch the bag as he rounded first base. The Cardinals jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Mets battled back with a pair of two-run homeruns by Kelly Shoppach and Daniel Murphy

Mets sweep Marlins

The Mets completed a sweep of the Marlins today with a 5-1 win. Jason Bay hit a grand slam in a five run first inning. Chris Young and four relievers combined on a six-hitter. Young went five innings for his fourth victory of the season.

Brad Mills, US Presswire
The Mets improved to 64-70 on the season with 28 games to go. The Mets are now tied for third place in the NL East and are not five games ahead of the Marlins for last place. The Mets are 7-3 in their last 10 games

The Mets lineup tonight will feature Ruben Tejada, Daniel Murphy, David Wright, Ike Davis, Lucas Duda, Kelly Shoppach, Mike Baxter, Andres Torres and Chris Young.

Philadelphia Phillies
US PRESSWIRE
The Phillies are 61-67 on the season which places them in third place in the National League East. The Phillies are playing pretty good baseball right now going 7-3 in their last ten games. The Mets are 59-69 currently in fourth place in the NL East and two games behind the Phillies. The Mets are 3-7 in their last ten games

Dodgers make a blockbuster deal

The Los Angeles Dodgers are stacked after acquiring Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett and Carl Crawford from the Red Sox yesterday in a huge deal. I canít believe how quickly this got done and how they kept it so quiet. It turned out to be a nine-player deal where James Loney went to the Red Sox along with some minor leaguers. In a Hollywood story, Gonzalez hit a three-run homerun last night in his first plate appearance for the Dodgers.

Don Mattingly
Charles LeClaire-US Presswire
The new ownership in Los Angeles has had no issue in spending money. Theyíve acquired the three stars mentioned earlier along with Hanley Ramirez, Shane Victorino and Joe Blanton since the trade deadline. They also still feature Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier and Clayton Kershaw. This team is going to be a load for a long time going forward as their core is really young

Huge trade being discussed

The Mets lost again tonight to the worst team in Major League Baseball. The Houston Astros defeated the Mets by a score of 3-1. Jon Niese only gave up three runs but this team is absolutely unable to score more than one run in a game. If the Marlins win tonight the Mets will drop to last place in the NL East.

The Los Angeles Dodgers in the meantime are trying to acquire Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett and Carl Crawford from the Boston Red Sox tonight in a blockbuster deal. The Red Sox are trying to break up their entire team after rumors have persisted all season that the team is not getting along with manager Bobby Valentine

Shortest post I've written

The Mets stink. How many days until football season? Actually maybe football season is going to be tough too since Iím already sick of hearing about the Jets or specifically Tim Tebow.

The Rutgers football season opens up soon, thatís something to look forward to, right

Mets have tanked

The Mets have tanked this second half and it has gotten to the point where it looks like they have quit. Theyíve lost two straight games at homes to the Rockies which is mind blowing. The offense has not hit at all and the defense is starting to make errors in bunches.

R.A. Dickey
Kim Klement, US Presswire
I havenít watched a full game in some time but every time I check the score they are down. Theyíve been awful at home this season and even though they are not going to make the playoffs you felt this week against the Rockies and Astros that they would show some life

Santana Shelled

The Mets dropped another game to the Nationals tonight by a score of 6-4. It seems like Johan Santana might be near the end as he gave up all six runs tonight. He has been dreadful ever since his no-hitter in early June.
Johan Santana
Anthony Gruppuso, US Presswire

The team is completely dead and is falling into irrelevancy which seems to be the case every year. There really isnít a reason to watch them outside of Matt Harvey. It seems whenever they get decent starting pitching no one hits or vice versa

Mets avoid sweep

The Mets avoided being swept by the Marlins today winning the game 6-1 behind R.A. Dickey. Dickey pitched a complete game allowing five hits while striking out ten batters. It was his 15th win of the year and he now leads the National League in victories.

The win snapped a nine-game home losing streak. The Mets are now 54-58 on the season. Andres Torres had a big game with a homerun, triple and double. He knocked in three of the Met runs. Josh Thole also picked up two hits on the day allowing the Mets to defeat Josh Johnson

Mets win

The Mets defeated the Padres last night by a score of 6-2. Jeremy Hefner went six innings for the win allowing just one run. The Mets bullpen had to make it an adventure in the ninth. Bobby Parnell started the ninth inning by giving up a homerun to Chase Headley. He allowed a double and a walk before being pulled for returning closer Frank Francisco.

Mike Baxter tied a National League record by walking five times. The win guaranteed the Mets a winning record on the West Coast trip as they have won six of the ten games so far before wrapping up today. Matt Harvey makes his third career start against Jason Marquis

Mets open series with Padres

The Mets somehow have won five of the eight games on their current West Coast trip. They split four with the Diamondbacks and took three out of four games against the Giants. They beat up the Giants pretty bad yesterday by a score of 9-1. Chris Young went seven innings for the win.

Ronny Cedeno got a rare start and contributed with five RBIís. Jason Bay actually got a hit and two RBIís as well. It was a stark contrast to the offensive woes from the previous night. The Mets now get set to face the Padres in a three-game set starting tonight when R.A. Dickey matches up with Clayton Richard
