Mets Win Again

The Mets improved to 6-2 yesterday with a 5-0 win over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. David Wright returned to action and on the first pitch he saw from Vance Worley, he hit a homerun to center field to give the Mets a quick 1-0 lead. Lucas Duda also hit a 2 run homer and Ruben Tejada added an RBI double.

Jon Niese had another really good outing throwing 6.2 innings of shutout ball and Bobby Parnell and Jon Rauch closed out the game. The Phillies are not the scary team they have been in the past without Ryan Howard and Chase Utley. The Mets pitching has been very good through the first eight games but the real test will be today when Mike Pelfrey pitches. If the Mets are going to have a successful season they need Pelfrey to pick it up. He was ok in his last outing against the Nationals but he’s been really bad at Citizens Bank Park in his career.

Luckily for the Mets Cole Hamels will be pitching for the Phillies. For one of the best starting pitchers in the National League; Hamels is only 3-10 lifetime against the Mets. Jason Bay is out of the lineup today as Scott Hairston will play left field. The Mets are currently ½ game behind the Nationals for the NL East lead.

Mets lose Wright and their first game

The Mets lost their first game last night by a score of 6-2 to the Nationals. I had a bad feeling about the game once I saw the starting lineup. The Mets were without Ike Davis and David Wright. Wright injured his pinky diving into the first base bag the night before. We can only hope he’ll only be out a few days. Davis was sitting against a lefty but got into the game as a pinch hitter last night and struck out. He’s now 0 for 16 on the year.

If you see Jason Bay hitting cleanup you basically know the team has no chance. He actually hit a double last night but struck out a few more times and is basically an automatic out at this point. Daniel Murphy had a tough night at the plate going 0 for 4 and also made a big error in the 6th inning.

Dillon Gee didn’t pitch too badly after allowing a homerun to lead off the game. If he would have gotten better defense from Murphy and Lucas Duda in the 6th inning the game could have played out differently. The team struggled all night against Ross Detwiler as he threw five shutout innings.

Today is a big game for the team as they send Johan Santana to the mound against Stephen Strasburg. I don’t really feel too good about this game especially if the team couldn’t hit last night. They need Ike Davis to start hitting especially if Wright is going to be out. The game begins at 1:10 pm this afternoon.

Mets continue to roll

The Mets are now 4-0 after last night’s come from behind 4-3 victory over the Nationals. Daniel Murphy singled home Mike Baxter in the bottom of the 9th inning for the walk off win. The team was down 3-0 in the third inning with Mike Pelfrey on the mound. It was an odd start for Pelfrey who actually matched his career high in strikeouts with 8 but also gave up 10 hits. Pelfrey lasted 5 2/3 innings.

The Mets go an RBI single from David Wright in the 3rd inning and then tied it on the first career homerun by rookie Kirk Nieuwenhuis in the fourth inning. He lifted a hanging slider by National starter Edwin Jackson into the right field seats for a two run homerun.

The Mets again got great pitching from the bullpen. Miguel Batista, Ramon Ramirez and Jon Rauch combined for 3 1/3 innings of no hit baseball to give the Mets a chance to tie the game. Rauch actually went two innings for the win.

The teams meet up again tonight at Citi Field with Dillon Gee making his first start of the season. He will be opposed by left hander Ross Detwiler. The game starts at 7:10 pm ET.

The Mets currently lead the NL East by two games over Washington.

MLB Injury Updates 4/12/2011

Four big names made the headlines today for injury related issues. One had good news of a return while it appears the other three will be missing some time.

Adam Dunn will be in the starting tonight for the Chicago White Sox. Dunn missed the last few games after undergoing an emergency appendectomy. The White Sox were taking it slow with their slugger and have decided that tonight he is back to full go. The team welcomes the power hitter back to an already solid lineup

NL Studs and Duds 4/9/11

Let's see how the studs and duds of the NL stack up against my picks from the AL. The studs of the NL are very recognizable names and represent the two best teams in the National League. The duds may not be quite as well known, and after this week they probably wouldn't mind people looking the other way on their performances.

The stud pitcher of the NL this week is Tim Lincecum. The Freak put together quite the week, going a combined 14 innings over his 2 starts and striking out a whopping 18 batters. He allowed 8 hits and only 1 ER leaving his ERA at a miniscule 0.64. Lincecum will try to avenge his tough luck loss to the Dodgers this week when Los Angeles comes to San Francisco to face the Giants
