MLB Top 5 4/27/11

Another week brings another top 5. This week's list looks very similar to the one posted last week; the only change coming at the 5th and final spot. As the weather's been warming, so have some teams.

The talk of the week surrounds the Boston Red Sox. They have turned up their level of play and are sitting right at the .500 mark. Though they do not quite make my list this week, there is no denying their talent and the fact that they will be frequenting these posts in the near future.

Another team that has been playing well of late is the Florida Marlins. They are 8-2 over their last 10 games and are pressing the Phillies in the NL East. However even with this recent success, there are still doubts about how consistent this young group will be. They have only played 6 games against teams .500 or better so far this year. This next week they have a chance to prove themselves as they face off against the Dodgers, Reds and Cardinals.

Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies remain at the top of the list this week. A late comeback in the series finale against the Brew Crew last week propelled the Phils to a 5 game winning streak. This run ended last night as Ian Kennedy outpitched Cliff Lee. The bats have cooled as of late as the team is averaging only 2.5 runs per game over their last 10, but even so the team went 6-4 over that stretch because of its dominant pitching staff. One thing to watch over this next week will be how Philadelphia handles the loss of closer Jose Contreras.

New York Yankees

The Yankees find themselves in the number 2 spot and the current leaders of the AL Beast. Up until Monday night, offense was king in New York. Before last night, the team was averaging 6.5 runs a game over its past 9. While this lineup will cause many opposing pitchers and managers to lose sleep, their rotation is still filled with question marks. Phil Hughes had another setback and the Yankees are now counting on Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia to provide consistent innings. As long as they can get some contribution from their starters, New York will look to the lineup to continue its winning ways.

Colorado Rockies

Sitting at 15-7, the Rockies are tied with the Phillies for the best record in baseball. They've had early success, but several things jump out at me as I look through their stats. The Rockies are 5th in the league in runs scored, but they are only 24th in team batting average. This tells me a lot of their runs are being scored thanks to timely hitting which usually levels out during a season. The team has also won a lot of close games, 9 of their 15 wins have been by 2 runs or less. While teams can only play who is on their schedule, the Rockies have only faced teams .500 or better 8 times, going 4-4 in those contests. I'm not trying to say this start is a fluke, but I don't think this team is the 2nd best in baseball as their record shows.

Texas Rangers

Texas finds itself in the four hole in this week's top 5. The Rangers lost 3 consecutive series before getting healthy against the Kansas City Royals. In that series, the Ranger's lineup found their bats, scoring 22 runs in the 3 games. While its offense has become Texas's trademark, the pitchers have been able to maintain a respectable 3.71 ERA. The Rangers look to continue their recent success against the Blue Jays before setting off on a west coast road trip against the A's and Mariners.

St. Louis Cardinals

For the 2nd week in a row I had to ponder over the list's 5th spot. I debated between the hot Red Sox and the young Marlins, but I eventually decided to go with the Cardinals. St. Louis's 2011 season got off to a rough start, but they have recovered in recent weeks and currently stand at 12-10. After taking a series against their rival Cincinnati Reds, the Cardinals have climbed back to the top of the NL Central. The Cardinals have been on fire since the return of slugger Matt Holliday who is a big reason the team leads the league in batting average and OBP. What I like most about St. Louis is the balanced success of their batters and pitchers; the team ERA sits at 3.19. It probably pains Cardinal's fans to think of the possibilities if Adam Wainwright was holding down a spot in their already solid rotation.

Hot Sox

The big story of this early season has been the slow start of the Boston Red Sox. After losing their first 6 games, the Red Sox astonished many by compiling a record of 2-10 over their first 12 contests. The stat geeks spoke, no team that started a season 0-6 has gone on to make the playoffs. Fans panicked, analysts dissected the issues and asked the question, could this bunch really not manage to make the postseason? After their performance this past week, the Red Sox are quickly showing that they are not your usual 0-6 start team, but they are certainly one to be feared in 2011.

Due to their recent hot streak, the Red Sox are poised to return to the .500 mark and are steadily rising in the AL East standings. The Sox have won 5 straight games and 8 of their last 9. The team is playing great baseball and has beaten reputable teams in the Blue Jays, Athletics and Angels. Their offense has been solid, contributing 5.1 runs a game over their previous 9. Struggling star Carl Crawford has picked his play up a bit in the last week, hitting at a .259 clip with 3 extra base hits including a homerun. Boston is hoping his contribution continues and he begins hitting as he did in a Rays uniform.

The larger story is the pitching staff. Over this same 9 game run of success, Red Sox pitchers have allowed only 1.78 earned runs a game. Starters have been responsible for 7 of the 8 wins, none allowing more than 2 ER over the stretch. Daisuke Matsuzaka and John Lackey have strung together back to back quality starts since their early season struggles, making many in Boston hopeful they will provide consistency to the rotation. Clay Buchholz looks to build off of his last start which was his best of the season.

While they are waiting for a few players to start playing to their potential, the Red Sox are beginning to look like the team many expected to contend for the World Series. With an upcoming schedule including the Orioles and Mariners, the Red Sox seem on the brink of climbing over the .500 mark. It appears the Sox have brushed off their early season struggles and are becoming the beast many had projected.

Performance Pitching

Monday brought its share of dominant pitching performances. Yesterday alone, seven pitchers went at least 7 innings and gave up no more than 1 earned run. This stat isn't even including the Pirate's Kevin Correia who threw a complete game against the Reds, only surrendering 2 earned runs.

The Red Sox Daisuke Matsuzaka started off the day holding the Blue Jays to only one hit over seven innings. Matsuzaka only needed 89 pitches to get through his 7 innings of work, in which he struck out 3 and walked 1.

As the day turned into night, MLB's evening schedule began, and the strong pitching continued. David Price shut out the offensive force of the White Sox over 8 innings, giving up only 4 hits while striking out 9.

C.J. Wilson of the Rangers faced off against the team's AL West rival Angels. While his counterpart Ervin Santana did not add to the list of performances, Wilson had a good night. He was able to scatter 9 hits and limit the damage, only allowing 1 earned run and striking out 9.

In a West vs. East battle, Ted Lilly led the Dodgers to a victory over Tim Hudson and the Braves. The Dodgers gave Lilly an early 3 run lead and that's all that he needed, going 7 scoreless innings. Lilly allowed only 4 hits and punched out 6 Braves.

While most games offered one strong pitching performance, there was one match up where both pitchers wanted to get in on the action. The Cubs faced off against the Padres and both sides pitched so well that extra innings was needed to decide the outcome. Both starters were very solid, Tim Stauffer of the Padres going 7 scoreless, allowing only 4 hits. However, Stauffer was bested by Cub’s enigma Carlos Zambrano, who struck out 10 over 8 scoreless innings.

While these were certainly some great match ups and performances, Monday saved its best show for last. The Freak Tim Lincecum faced off against the red hot Colorado Rockies. The Rockies and Coors Field were no match for the former Cy Young winner as Lincecum held the Rockies hitless over 6 innings. Colorado was able to get to Timmy in the 7th but they only managed one run. Lincecum finished the night going 7.2 innings; he allowed a single run and struck out 10.

On Monday, pitching was king. We will see what Tuesday brings, if the pitching continues or if the offense controls the night.

AL Studs and Duds 4/16/11

It's time to once again find out MLB's studs and duds. This week provided plenty of prime time players as well as some stats that will make grown men cringe. I'll kick it off with the AL and then you can check back later today for the NL rundown.

The Best of Beckett

The Red Sox came into this weekend's series with the Yankees at a sorry 0-6. They were able to claim their first victory of the early season Friday afternoon, but lost the battle of the bullpens in the second game Saturday. Standing in the way of the Red Sox first series win of the year was a formidable New York lineup and Yankee's ace CC Sabathia. To counter the Red Sox called on their one time stopper, Josh Beckett.

Beckett started off the year with a less than stellar start against the Cleveland Indians. The main concern was not as much the runs Beckett allowed but the number of pitches and walks he threw, only allowing himself to go 5 innings. Going into the game against the patient Yankees you had to wonder how long Beckett would last and how much damage would be done

Cooperstown Bound?

If athletes could map out their careers they would include things such as Rookie of the Year Awards, MVP's and of course plenty of championship rings. Many would plan a storybook ending, perhaps a tearful sendoff by a stadium full of their devoted fans. No one, if given the choice, would choose Manny Ramirez's exit.

Manny Done Being Manny?

It has just been announced that Manny Ramirez will end his illustrious and always entertaining career. Only a week into the new baseball season, the Tampa Bay Rays designated hitter is calling it quits. It appears that Manny was dealing with the league on an issue regarding MLB's Joint Drug Prevention Treatment Program. I'm certain that more information will be coming out of this situation, but I for one am certainly surprised.

Though he has seen his numbers tail off in recent years, Manny ended last season with a combined .298 batting average playing for the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers. It is certain that he did not have the start that he wanted this year

Any Ray of Hope in Tampa?

A few days ago I took a look at a team with high expectations coming into this season who stumbled out of the gates. While the Red Sox have not yet found the win column, I think that they are in much better shape than the Tampa Bay Rays. I usually do not like putting too much stock in early starts, but the Rays are in trouble.

The Rays have been a team that has thrived off of its home grown talent and shrewd trades. The team rose suddenly to prominence during the 2008 season and has been a contender in the tough AL East ever since. The team has played well under manager Joe Maddon, relying mainly on strong team defense and pitching

Intriguing Matchups

While many will be tuned into the Master's this weekend, baseball has a few games that pit division rivals against each other. The Phillies travel to Atlanta for a matchup of two teams likely to play into October. Also this weekend the rivalry of all baseball rivalries will see the Yankees roll into Boston. Both of these series should be entertaining and include this weekend's most intriguing pitching matchups.

Lester's Performance Not Enough

The Red Sox came into today's game against the Indians looking for some momentum to take into their weekend series against the Yankees. Jon Lester did all he could to get the Sox their first win in this afternoon's start, holding the Indians scoreless over 7 innings while striking out 9. His strong performance was not enough thanks to Fausto Carmona.

Trouble in Beantown?

The MLB offseason certainly took some interesting turns. Several of the larger name free agents wound up in destinations that many did not predict. A few of these moves left us entering the season with fairly clear favorites to represent each league come October.

The big fish this offseason was undoubtedly Cliff Lee, coming off a strong performance last year especially in the playoffs. He shocked the baseball world by passing on the Yankee's higher paycheck to join a filthy rotation in Philadelphia
