Devils Advance to Finals

It was a pretty bad night for fans of the Philadelphia teams. The Flyers were eliminated from the NHL playoffs by the Devils, the Phillies blew a lead for the second consecutive day and lost to the Mets and the 76ers lost to the Bulls in game five of their NBA playoff series.

The Devils didn’t play their best game of the series but won 3-1 on goals by Bryce Salvador, David Clarkson and Ilya Kovalchuk. The Flyers like they have all series got the first goal of the game by Max Talbot. The Devils scored two minutes later on Salvador’s goal. The goal by Clarkson could have been the back breaker for the Flyers. Goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov had the puck and tried to send it into the corner but it hit Clarkson’s stick and went into the net. The goal seemed to take all of the energy away from the Flyers.

The Flyers took a lot of unnecessary penalties during the game and it finally came back to bite them in the third period. James van Riemsdyk took a mindless holding penalty in the offensive zone which put the Devils on the power play and they clinched the game four seconds into the penalty when Kovalchuk scored his fifth goal of the postseason.

The Devils will now wait for the winner of the Rangers-Capitals series with game six tonight in Washington D.C.

The Mets trailed 4-0 after the second inning against the Phillies last night but came back to beat the Phillies 7-4. The Mets once again got a bunch of hits with two outs that plated runs. The Phillies also had some bad defense and relief pitching which led to the Mets comeback.

The Mets will look for the sweep tonight when Dillon Gee opposes Cliff Lee. The Mets are currently 1.5 games out of first place.

Martin Brodeur's Birthday

Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals begins in about 45 minutes with the Devils leading the series 2 game to 1. The Devils will look to put a stranglehold on the series and it’s also Martin Brodeur’s 40th birthday. What better present could he give himself other than a Devils victory?

I’m expecting a Flyer team to play desperate tonight as no team wants to go down 3-1 in a series. Ryan Carter is out of the lineup tonight so Tim Sestito will step in and make his playoff debut. The fourth line has been playing very well in the postseason so let’s hope Sestito continues the good fortune of the line.

The Mets defeated the Diamondbacks today by a score of 3-1 with R.A Dickey picking up the win going eight innings to give the bullpen a rest. The win gave the Mets the series victory and improves their record to 15-13 on the year.

Mets Lose Again

The Mets are dreadful again blowing a lead last night to the Arizona Diamondbacks and losing the game 5-4. It’s like groundhog’s day watching this team the last five or six seasons. They have no clutch hitting especially in the middle of the lineup, the bullpen is awful, the defense is brutal and the starters are usually suspect. Dillon Gee actually pitched very well last night but only went six innings.

We need guys that go eight or nine innings which I know is extremely unlikely these days. The bullpen is worn out already from the amount of innings they have to pitch every night. I’ve never seen a team too where every time a mistake occurs in an inning the other team scores. Last night Ike Davis makes an error and everything just falls to pieces. This team is just not good enough to win games where mistakes occur. They have to play perfect baseball to win games which is sad.

This team as well has zero team speed. In previous years at least we were able to steal bases now we can’t even do that.

I can’t even look forward to hockey today because the Devils don’t play until tomorrow. How long until football starts?

Big Sports Day

I’m really pumped for all the sports going on tonight. It has been a good day so far with the Mets finishing off the sweep of the Marlins with a two run rally in the ninth inning off of Heath Bell to win 3-2. I really don’t know how they keep winning with so little offense but the pitching has been great.

The Devils play game 7 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. If they win tonight they will either play the Flyers or the Capitals in the next round. I really like the fact that they are not home tonight as they play much better on the road. The Rangers also play a game 7 tonight against Ottawa at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers game will be on at 7 while the Devils are on at 8:30

Mets Injury Woes

Today has been a pretty interesting one in sports. The Mets coming off a double header loss to the Giants yesterday placed two players on the DL today. Jason Bay and Mike Pelfrey both were placed on the 15 day disabled list today. The rash of injuries continues with this team. I think they’re cursed or maybe Citi Field is cursed.

Tonight was the return of Jose Reyes as a Marlin. The reaction was mixed from what I heard on television. Johan Santana pitched great striking out 11 in 6.2 innings but like always the Mets didn’t score for him. They’ve yet to score a run while he’s been pitching this year. They managed to win the game 2-1 on a bases loaded walk in the seventh and a RBI single by Lucas Duda in the 8th

Mets Win, Devils Fall

Another odd day of sports came and went yesterday. The Mets beat the Giants 5-4 after looking like a little league team and letting the Giants tie the game at 4 in the top of the ninth inning. Ruben Tejada and Kirk Nieuwenhuis let a popup fall between them allowing two runs to score.

They won the game in the tenth inning after Buster Posey threw a ball away down the right field line after Nieuwenhuis hit a ground ball to the first baseman Brandon Belt. Scott Hairston hit Posey on his slide forcing the bad throw. Mike Pelfrey actually pitched very well allowing only one run through eight innings

Mets are at .700

The Mets beat the Atlanta Braves for the fourth straight time this season by a score of 6-1 last night. It was the second time they beat Atlanta starter Tommy Hanson. Dillon Gee went seven innings before Jon Rauch and Tim Byrdak finished the game.

Jason Bay robbed Jack Wilson of a homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning when he made a great jumping catch above the wall. The game was tied at 1 when he made this play. In the top half of the sixth inning the Mets scored three runs on a homerun by Ike Davis. Davis has now homered in back to back games

Both Teams go Down

It was a bad day for my local sports teams after a really good start to the weekend. The Devils lost the second game of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals to the Florida Panthers by a score of 4-2. They gave up a goal less than a minute in and were down 3-0 after two periods.

They scored two quick goals at the beginning of the 3rd period to cut the deficit to a goal but were unable to get the equalizer. Jose Theodore made some really nice saves on Zach Parise and Ilya Kovalchuk at the end of the game. The series is now tied at one with the series heading to New Jersey

Mets Win Again

The Mets improved to 6-2 yesterday with a 5-0 win over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. David Wright returned to action and on the first pitch he saw from Vance Worley, he hit a homerun to center field to give the Mets a quick 1-0 lead. Lucas Duda also hit a 2 run homer and Ruben Tejada added an RBI double.

Jon Niese had another really good outing throwing 6.2 innings of shutout ball and Bobby Parnell and Jon Rauch closed out the game. The Phillies are not the scary team they have been in the past without Ryan Howard and Chase Utley. The Mets pitching has been very good through the first eight games but the real test will be today when Mike Pelfrey pitches. If the Mets are going to have a successful season they need Pelfrey to pick it up. He was ok in his last outing against the Nationals but he’s been really bad at Citizens Bank Park in his career

Mets lose Wright and their first game

The Mets lost their first game last night by a score of 6-2 to the Nationals. I had a bad feeling about the game once I saw the starting lineup. The Mets were without Ike Davis and David Wright. Wright injured his pinky diving into the first base bag the night before. We can only hope he’ll only be out a few days. Davis was sitting against a lefty but got into the game as a pinch hitter last night and struck out. He’s now 0 for 16 on the year.

If you see Jason Bay hitting cleanup you basically know the team has no chance. He actually hit a double last night but struck out a few more times and is basically an automatic out at this point. Daniel Murphy had a tough night at the plate going 0 for 4 and also made a big error in the 6th inning

Mets continue to roll

The Mets are now 4-0 after last night’s come from behind 4-3 victory over the Nationals. Daniel Murphy singled home Mike Baxter in the bottom of the 9th inning for the walk off win. The team was down 3-0 in the third inning with Mike Pelfrey on the mound. It was an odd start for Pelfrey who actually matched his career high in strikeouts with 8 but also gave up 10 hits. Pelfrey lasted 5 2/3 innings.

The Mets go an RBI single from David Wright in the 3rd inning and then tied it on the first career homerun by rookie Kirk Nieuwenhuis in the fourth inning. He lifted a hanging slider by National starter Edwin Jackson into the right field seats for a two run homerun

First Place Mets

Amazingly when I looked at the MLB standings a little while ago I saw that the New York Mets were all alone in first place in the National League East. Regardless if the season is only three days old, no Met fan would have ever believed they would see that site at any point this year. They can try to go 4-0 tonight with Mike Pelfrey pitching against the Nationals.

They played really sound baseball in the opening weekend. The Braves have been picked by some to be a threat in the NL East and a wild card winner. The Mets got great starting pitching from Johan Santana, R.A. Dickey and Jon Niese. Niese had a no-hitter going into the 7th inning yesterday until getting tired. They’ve had some really big hits although they are not hitting that well with runners in scoring position. David Wright has gotten off to a hot start with an RBI in each game. Lucas Duda hit two homeruns in the game on Saturday. Jason Bay had his first RBI since last September in the game yesterday as well. The only regular that seemed to struggle so far is Ike Davis

First Met to the DL

It took one game but the first injury of the season has happened with the Mets. Outfielder Andres Torres, who the team acquired for Angel Pagan, is headed to the disabled list. Torres hurt his calf in spring training and re-injured late in the game yesterday. Outfield prospect Kirk Nieuwenhuis has been called up to take his place.

Niewenhuis is thought to be a pretty good fielder and is working on improving his hitting. It seems he may alternate playing time with Scott Hairston. Niewenhuis was injured in spring training as well and missed a lot of games at AAA last season in Buffalo

Mets Opening Day

I think the opening day of baseball should be a holiday. It just doesn’t seem right to be stuck at work when there is so much baseball going on. I’ve had the MLB Gamecast up to follow the Mets game so far today.

The game is currently in the top of the 7th inning with the Mets leading 1-0. The Mets scored in the bottom of the 6th inning on a RBI single by David Wright. Johan Santana went five scoreless innings and seemed to pitch really well

Baseball opens up tomorrow

We are closing in on the real opening day for baseball. The A’s and Mariners technically opened the season last week in Japan but I am not sure how many people watched or knew. Tomorrow night the Cardinals visit the Marlins to open up the season in the United States. Kyle Lohse gets the opening day start for the Cardinals and he will go up against Josh Johnson for the Marlins.

The big news out of Mets camp this week was that Johan Santana will make the opening day start against the Braves on Thursday afternoon. We really need Johan if we have any chances of a Wild Card this season so it is a good start for the Mets to have him start the season. The Braves will counter with Tommy Hanson

1 Week to Mets Opening Day

It’s hard to believe the Mets open up the 2012 regular season one week from today. I guess it’s almost as hard to realize the MLB season already has begun. If you didn’t notice two regular season games were played in Japan by the A’s and Mariners. I couldn’t find either on television as they were played early in the morning. The teams split the two game series.

I haven’t watched too many Met games this spring but I’m looking forward to the season. I love the fact that baseball is almost every day. Mike Pelfrey has been horrid this spring training and that is going to be a major concern with a starting pitching staff that already has questions. He normally starts slow in spring training anyway but the Mets need him to pick it up this season

Fantasy Baseball Auction Draft

Well I had my keeper league fantasy baseball draft last night and I think I did pretty well. This was the second year in a row where we went with the auction style. My team last year was awful so it could only get better.

My most expensive player was starting pitcher Jon Lester from the Red Sox who I paid $30 for. My most expensive position player was Lester’s teammate Dustin Pedroia who I paid $26 for. Pedroia was actually the first player I won in the draft, second pick overall. I may have hurt myself overall since I had $31 remaining so we’ll see

Mets Spring Training Action

The Mets have started playing real baseball games two days ago. I watched a pretty good amount of the game on Monday night. I was really excited to watch one of their top prospects, Matt Harvey, pitch. He didn’t have his best command but he was able to pitch two scoreless innings in relief of Dillon Gee. You can tell he has good stuff but he still has to work on getting his off speed pitches over the plate.

I was really happy to see how aggressive the Mets were on the base paths. I believe they had 4 or 5 stolen bases and got caught once. Andres Torres led off the game with a walk and on the very first pitch to Daniel Murphy; he stole second and then came around on a hit by Murphy. As great as Jose Reyes was, he could be maddening to watch on the base paths. If a lefty was on the mound, he almost never ran it seemed. Also, he would never go on the first pitch like Torres did. I hope this keeps up during the regular season

The Passing of Gary Carter

Besides the fact that Spring Training is about to begin, the biggest Mets news this past week is the passing of Hall of Fame Catcher, Gary Carter. Carter was only 57, leaving us way too early.

I can’t imagine any Met fan who followed the team in the 80’s would believe that The Kid would be the first to leave us. I think the saying only the good die young really applies here. I’m definitely sad that he’s gone but happy in the fact that he’s no longer suffering and has gone on to a better place. My condolences go out to his family
