Lester's Performance Not Enough

The Red Sox came into today's game against the Indians looking for some momentum to take into their weekend series against the Yankees. Jon Lester did all he could to get the Sox their first win in this afternoon's start, holding the Indians scoreless over 7 innings while striking out 9. His strong performance was not enough thanks to Fausto Carmona.

Carmona came into the game needing to rebound from his awful debut that lasted 3 long innings in which the White Sox scored 10 runs off of him. He came back today and held the other Sox scoreless with 2 hits over 7 solid innings.

The Indians used small ball to get their run off of fireballer Daniel Bard in the 8th. The Red Sox comeback fell short when Darnell McDonald was picked off rounding second on a JD Drew single. The 1-0 final puts the Red Sox at 0-6 on the season.

Perhaps they can claim a moral victory with Lester's solid start, but the Red Sox leave Cleveland still seeking their first win of the year.

Fausto Carmona and Jon Lester are two of my favorite pitchers. I never gave up on Carmona because even when he had those bad years- in 08 for example- he showed that the raw talent was always there. For Carmona, it's a matter of consistency and the mental portion of the game. The mental part of baseball is extremely important to understand and get down. That's why players like Khalil Greene struggle to play, Zack Greinke used to be one of them, and do anything of note even though they have talent.

There have been many pitchers who have had the raw talent of Carmona but who couldn't put it together. As an O's fan I think of guys like Daniel Cabrera who had all the physical tools in the world but couldn't figure it out and put it all together. Depending on how the Indians do, I think Carmona could be a big target when the trade deadline rolls around, I know the Yankees were said to be interested in him this offseason.
