Reyes to Toronto

Jose Reyes
Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE
The first huge trade of the baseball season is about to go down with anyone being paid on the Marlins going to the Toronto Blue Jays. The proposed trade will send Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle, John Buck and Emilio Bonifacio going to the Blue Jays for Yunel Escobar and some prospects.

If the trade goes through the Marlins would have traded all their big free agent signings from last season. They have already traded Heath Bell earlier. This trade would significantly improve the Blue Jays.

I donít understand how baseball allows the Marlins to do this every few seasons. Normally they have a fire sale after they win the World Series but these moves come after they finished in last place. This gives hope to me that the Mets wonít finish last in the NL East next season.

Mets sweep Marlins

The Mets completed a sweep of the Marlins today with a 5-1 win. Jason Bay hit a grand slam in a five run first inning. Chris Young and four relievers combined on a six-hitter. Young went five innings for his fourth victory of the season.

The Mets improved to 64-70 on the season with 28 games to go. The Mets are now tied for third place in the NL East and are not five games ahead of the Marlins for last place. The Mets are 7-3 in their last 10 games.

The team left for St. Louis after the game to start a three-game series with the Cardinals. The Cardinals currently own one of the two wild card spots in the National League. Colin McHugh makes his second start for the Mets tomorrow against Joe Kelly.

Mets Injury Woes

Jason Bay & P Mike Pelfrey to the DL
Today has been a pretty interesting one in sports. The Mets coming off a double header loss to the Giants yesterday placed two players on the DL today. Jason Bay and Mike Pelfrey both were placed on the 15 day disabled list today. The rash of injuries continues with this team. I think theyíre cursed or maybe Citi Field is cursed.

Tonight was the return of Jose Reyes as a Marlin. The reaction was mixed from what I heard on television. Johan Santana pitched great striking out 11 in 6.2 innings but like always the Mets didnít score for him. Theyíve yet to score a run while heís been pitching this year. They managed to win the game 2-1 on a bases loaded walk in the seventh and a RBI single by Lucas Duda in the 8th.

The Devils are currently playing game six of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. They had a 2-0 lead early in the second period but Florida tied it. They are now heading to overtime. I donít have a good feeling about it. They are outshooting Florida 36-13 but have to go to overtime. If they lose this game their season ends early again.

Baseball opens up tomorrow

Play Ball!
We are closing in on the real opening day for baseball. The Aís and Mariners technically opened the season last week in Japan but I am not sure how many people watched or knew. Tomorrow night the Cardinals visit the Marlins to open up the season in the United States. Kyle Lohse gets the opening day start for the Cardinals and he will go up against Josh Johnson for the Marlins.

The big news out of Mets camp this week was that Johan Santana will make the opening day start against the Braves on Thursday afternoon. We really need Johan if we have any chances of a Wild Card this season so it is a good start for the Mets to have him start the season. The Braves will counter with Tommy Hanson

MLB Top 5 4/27/11

Another week brings another top 5. This week's list looks very similar to the one posted last week; the only change coming at the 5th and final spot. As the weather's been warming, so have some teams.

The talk of the week surrounds the Boston Red Sox. They have turned up their level of play and are sitting right at the .500 mark. Though they do not quite make my list this week, there is no denying their talent and the fact that they will be frequenting these posts in the near future
