Mets are at .700

The Mets beat the Atlanta Braves for the fourth straight time this season by a score of 6-1 last night. It was the second time they beat Atlanta starter Tommy Hanson. Dillon Gee went seven innings before Jon Rauch and Tim Byrdak finished the game.

Jason Bay robbed Jack Wilson of a homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning when he made a great jumping catch above the wall. The game was tied at 1 when he made this play. In the top half of the sixth inning the Mets scored three runs on a homerun by Ike Davis. Davis has now homered in back to back games.

Jason Bay added a homerun off ex-Met Livan Hernandez in the top of the ninth inning and it was his second homerun of the year. It would be really nice if we start to see something of the old Jason Bay. He missed the game before with a jammed finger much like David Wright.

The team is now 7-3 and a half game back of the Nationals for first place in the NL East. The two teams are in action again tonight with Johan Santana taking the mound against Randall Delgado. This will be the first time the Mets have faced Delgado.

First Met to the DL

It took one game but the first injury of the season has happened with the Mets. Outfielder Andres Torres, who the team acquired for Angel Pagan, is headed to the disabled list. Torres hurt his calf in spring training and re-injured late in the game yesterday. Outfield prospect Kirk Nieuwenhuis has been called up to take his place.

Niewenhuis is thought to be a pretty good fielder and is working on improving his hitting. It seems he may alternate playing time with Scott Hairston. Niewenhuis was injured in spring training as well and missed a lot of games at AAA last season in Buffalo.

The Mets play tomorrow afternoon resuming their series with the Braves. The Mets will send knuckleballer R.A. Dickey to the mound against Jair Jurrjens. The game will be played at 1:10 pm ET.

Mets Opening Day

I think the opening day of baseball should be a holiday. It just doesn’t seem right to be stuck at work when there is so much baseball going on. I’ve had the MLB Gamecast up to follow the Mets game so far today.

The game is currently in the top of the 7th inning with the Mets leading 1-0. The Mets scored in the bottom of the 6th inning on a RBI single by David Wright. Johan Santana went five scoreless innings and seemed to pitch really well.
The Braves currently have a man on third base with one out. Tim Byrdak has come into pitch against Jose Constanza. I’m sure I’ll be updating later in the blog. Byrdak just struck out Constanza by the way. Byrdak also struck out Michael Bourn to get out of the inning.

I haven’t seen any publication where the Mets finish higher than last. I think this might be a good thing since there are no expectations. The lineup should be decent if Wright, Jason Bay, Ike Davis and Lucas Duda all have years they are capable of. The pitching could be shaky because if Santana goes down, we have no depth at all.

The opening day lineup has consisted of Josh Thole, Ike Davis, Daniel Murhpy, Ruben Tejada, Wright, Bay, Andres Torres and Duda. The bench consists of Mike Baxter, Ronny Cedeno, Justin Turner, Scott Hairston and Mike Nickeas.

The pitching staff consists of Santana, R A Dickey, Jon Niese, Dillon Gee and Mike Pelfrey. The relievers are Manny Acosta, Miguel Batista, Byrdak, Frank Francisco, Bobby Parnell, Ramon Ramirez and Jon Rauch.

Baseball opens up tomorrow

We are closing in on the real opening day for baseball. The A’s and Mariners technically opened the season last week in Japan but I am not sure how many people watched or knew. Tomorrow night the Cardinals visit the Marlins to open up the season in the United States. Kyle Lohse gets the opening day start for the Cardinals and he will go up against Josh Johnson for the Marlins.

The big news out of Mets camp this week was that Johan Santana will make the opening day start against the Braves on Thursday afternoon. We really need Johan if we have any chances of a Wild Card this season so it is a good start for the Mets to have him start the season. The Braves will counter with Tommy Hanson

MLB Top 5 4/20/2011

There was a little reshuffling in my top 5 this week, with one team dropping off the list. The 4 that remain from last week change slots, and the World Series champs make the cut for this week's top 5. It's still very early and there are some other teams with solid records, but it's hard to compare wins and losses when teams are still rounding into regular season form. With that I felt like I had a little explaining to do with my choices.

The Cleveland Indians share the best record in baseball with the Colorado Rockies, but the Indians did not make the cut. They only have played in one full series against a team playing at least .500 baseball and they lost that series to the Angels. Their pitching has been lights out but it's still too early for me to tell if this streak is due to scheduling or a legitimate turnaround. Two other teams that I seriously looked at for spots on the list were the LA Angels and Cincinnati Reds; maybe next week guys

Performance Pitching

Monday brought its share of dominant pitching performances. Yesterday alone, seven pitchers went at least 7 innings and gave up no more than 1 earned run. This stat isn't even including the Pirate's Kevin Correia who threw a complete game against the Reds, only surrendering 2 earned runs.

Intriguing Matchups

While many will be tuned into the Master's this weekend, baseball has a few games that pit division rivals against each other. The Phillies travel to Atlanta for a matchup of two teams likely to play into October. Also this weekend the rivalry of all baseball rivalries will see the Yankees roll into Boston. Both of these series should be entertaining and include this weekend's most intriguing pitching matchups.
